Adashino Nenbutsuji Temple & Bamboo Forrest

Fast forward to 2025, its summer, we are in Kyoto in search of unique Japan experience and culture. When dreaming of photography in Japan you are likely to think about a magic Bamboo Forrest encounter.  We sure did.

After researching options and talking to a few locals on the ground, Adashino Nenbutsuji Temple provided such the opportunity. A little harder to get to, a little more off the beaten path that another popular sites, this temple provided an opportunity experience some classic Japanese serenity.

Founded somewhere in the early 800s, this Buddhist Temple is very traditional with sacred spots and many memorial Buddha statues. Many of the ~8000 statues that are dedicated to lone lost souls who died without a family which just carries such a human story. It was a very peaceful place where you could feel the connection to nature and absorb the vast history it protects.

As you wind through the temple you find a set of stairs flanked by the towering Bamboo grove to enjoy. A short climb to the top of the temple, leading to a clearing with another shrine. If you time it right, you may be the only ones around and can just stop and enjoy. No hustle and bustle.

As this place will undoubtedly become more popular, I hope it can maintain its serene state.  There are some spots that do not allow photography which I hope can be preserved. It is filled with other fun and inspiring things to photograp. So many small details to take in and enjoy.
